The witness question: credible person, extraordinary claim

Shrum is often presented by UFO writers as a better-than-average witness because he was not simply an anonymous passer-by. Later publisher and bookseller descriptions of Aliens in the Forest identify him as Donald R. It has the structure of a campfire survival story as much as a UFO report.

It also occupies an awkward place within UFO classification. It is not a simple light-in-the-sky report, where astronomy or aircraft identification might resolve the matter.
