In the clip, a small hot object is tracked by the aircraft’s sensor. The cockpit audio is part of why the video became famous: the aircrew comment that the object appears to rotate and refer to other objects “going against the wind”. Because the footage is thermal imagery, the shape on screen is not necessarily the physical outline of a craft. How the video entered the public record
Gimbal became widely known through the wave of reporting that began in late 2017 around the Pentagon’s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program and Navy UAP videos. The clips circulated publicly before the Department of Defense formally authorised their release. AARO, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, now lists the Gimbal video under official UAP imagery as “NAVAIR - FOIA: Unresolved Case: GIMBAL Video”, describing it as video of a US Navy F/A-18 crew’s encounter with an unexplained anomalous phenomenon. That is the strongest current official status: authenticated, publicly released, and unresolved in the public-facing record. Why pilots took it seriously
The Gimbal video would be much less important if it were only a blurry clip without human context. Its significance comes partly from the testimony of aviators associated with the Roosevelt-era sightings. Former Navy pilot Ryan Graves told CBS’s 60 Minutes that his F/A-18F squadron began seeing UAP in restricted airspace southeast of Virginia Beach in 2014 after a radar upgrade made it possible to detect and then cue infrared sensors onto objects. Graves told 60 Minutes the clip was “difficult” to explain and pointed to features such as apparent rotation, altitude, and propulsion uncertainty, while also saying he did not know what it was. The witness layer also includes claims beyond the public 34-second clip. A 2023 technical preprint by Yannick Peings and Marik von Rennenkampff summarised pilot-linked claims that the object was within 10 nautical miles, appeared on radar to stop and reverse direction with no turn radius, and was associated with a formation of four to six other unknown objects. Those claims, if correct, would make the event more anomalous than the public video alone can establish. What the public video can and cannot prove
The public clip proves less than many dramatic retellings imply. It establishes that a Navy aircraft’s infrared targeting system tracked something the crew could not immediately identify, and that the crew perceived the situation as unusual. It also preserves sensor-display information that analysts can use to infer possible geometry, line of sight and camera behaviour. It does not, by itself, establish the object’s range, size, exact speed, full flight path, origin, or physical shape.
That limitation is not a minor technicality. In infrared targeting footage, an unresolved distant aircraft, a glare pattern, or a small object at an uncertain distance can look far more dramatic than it is. The 2021 ODNI preliminary UAP assessment made this broader point about UAP data: the available reporting was largely inconclusive, sensor vantage points and sensor types strongly affect interpretation, and optical sensors may provide some information about shape and structure while radio-frequency sensors are more useful for velocity and range. The ODNI report also noted that many UAP reports involved multiple sensors and that some incidents appeared to show unusual movement or flight characteristics, but it did not publicly resolve Gimbal. The main sceptical explanation: glare and the camera gimbal
The most developed sceptical interpretation is that Gimbal shows infrared glare from a distant conventional aircraft, probably viewed from behind or near-behind, with the apparent rotation caused by the gimbal-mounted camera system rather than by the object itself. Mick West, a prominent UFO video analyst and sceptical investigator, has argued that the shape resembles engine glare rather than a visible craft, and that camera de-rotation mechanisms associated with “gimbal roll” can make glare rotate in the way seen in the clip. This explanation has real strengths. It directly addresses the most eye-catching visual feature: the rotation. It also explains why the apparent object looks like a featureless blob rather than a clearly resolved aircraft, and why the “aura” or outline around it may be an image-processing effect rather than a physical field or envelope. The sceptical case does not need to prove that every pilot statement is wrong. It only needs to show that the public video, taken alone, is compatible with a mundane object and optical artefacts. That is a narrower but powerful point. If the most spectacular visual feature can be produced by the sensor system, then the video becomes weak evidence for extraordinary flight, even if the broader encounter remains unexplained.
The unresolved counterargument: context outside the clip
The counterargument is that Gimbal should not be judged solely as a 34-second internet video. Supporters of a more anomalous reading point to the surrounding witness claims, radar context, and reports of additional objects. The Peings and von Rennenkampff preprint attempts to reconstruct possible flight paths from the video and argues that, at the range reportedly given by aviators, the object’s motion could match witness descriptions of a rapid reversal and a vertical U-turn. The key unresolved issue is range. If the object were close, the implied motion could be highly unusual. If it were much farther away, the same angular motion in the video could be compatible with an ordinary aircraft trajectory. Publicly available versions of the clip do not supply enough independent range data to settle that question. This is why Gimbal remains more resistant than simple “it is obviously a saucer” or “it is obviously nothing” framings allow.
There is also a provenance gap. Officials have authenticated the video and listed it as unresolved, but they have not released the full package of radar data, sensor logs, longer footage, pilot reports, or classified analysis that would allow an outside technical community to test the case from end to end.
