Introduction

The dispute over allegedly missing frames from the 1950 Great Falls, Montana UFO film became almost as famous as the film itself. Nick Mariana insisted that the clearest portions of his footage disappeared after the U.S. Air Force examined the original reel, while Air Force personnel denied removing anything beyond a damaged frame. That disagreement transformed a short strip of 16 mm film into a long-running chain-of-custody controversy: if the most revealing images vanished before later analysts studied the footage, then every later conclusion — sceptical or pro-UFO — rested on incomplete evidence. The argument matters because the surviving film is ambiguous. The missing-frame claim is what turns an uncertain visual record into a dispute about evidence handling, institutional credibility, and whether the original event can still be judged fairly. What Mariana said was removed

Nick Mariana maintained that the opening section of the film originally showed the objects much more clearly than the surviving copies do. According to his later accounts, the first several dozen frames revealed metallic, rotating disc-shaped objects with a visible “notch” or dark band around their edges. He claimed these were the frames removed after the film was sent to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for analysis. [Wikipedia]WikipediaMariana UFO filmMariana UFO film

The timing of the allegation is important. Mariana had already shown the film publicly in Great Falls before surrendering it to the Air Force. That created a pool of local witnesses who later said the version they first saw appeared longer or clearer than the copy eventually circulated nationally. Some viewers claimed the earlier version showed more obvious structure and rotation in the objects. Others recalled a noticeably longer sequence before the familiar surviving footage began. One of the most frequently cited supporting details concerns film length. Captain John Brynildsen, the Air Force officer who handled the transfer, reportedly gave different descriptions of how much film had been collected. In one account he referred to approximately eight feet of film, while another communication reportedly described roughly fifteen feet being sent for analysis. Later commentators noted that the surviving archival footage measures substantially less than fifteen feet. UFO writers have long argued that these inconsistent figures suggest that footage was removed somewhere in the process. [Wikipedia]WikipediaIncidente UFO di MarianaIncidente UFO di Mariana

That arithmetic, however, is less conclusive than it first appears. The reports do not always make clear whether the quoted lengths referred only to exposed UFO footage, to the entire reel, or to edited sections including unrelated material. Film handling practices of the period also complicate reconstruction. Sixteen-millimetre reels were commonly spliced, trimmed, and duplicated during processing and projection. Without a documented pre-transfer inventory, the exact original length cannot now be verified. The dispute survives largely because the paperwork is incomplete and the surviving film lacks a secure continuous chain of custody from exposure through later archival storage.

What investigators could and could not verify

The Air Force consistently denied deliberately removing meaningful footage. According to later summaries of the case, officials stated that only a single damaged frame had been removed during technical handling. They rejected Mariana’s accusation that dozens of frames showing structured craft had vanished. [Wikipedia]WikipediaMariana UFO filmMariana UFO film

The problem is that later investigators were never working from an unquestionably original, untouched reel. By the time the film entered broader UFO research circles, the surviving material already existed within a disputed custody history. Even analysts who believed the film deserved serious study acknowledged that uncertainty. The University of Colorado UFO study — usually called the Condon Report — concluded that the images were difficult to reconcile fully with aircraft reflections, yet it also noted the limits imposed by the available material and the inability to reconstruct every aspect of the filming conditions. Several later researchers tried to use photogrammetry and frame-by-frame analysis to settle the issue scientifically. These efforts focused on the surviving footage: the motion of the objects, their brightness, apparent angular size, relative movement, and behaviour as they crossed the field of view. But none of those studies could answer the core custody question because the allegedly missing section was, by definition, unavailable. Analysts therefore ended up arguing over two different evidential worlds:

  • the surviving film, which can still be studied technically;
  • the claimed missing segment, which survives only through testimony and memory.

That split is why the case never stabilised into either a clean debunking or a clean vindication.

The surviving footage itself does show characteristics that complicated simple dismissal. The objects maintained a steady spacing and orientation, and some analysts believed their light patterns did not behave exactly like ordinary reflections from aircraft. At the same time, sceptical investigators argued that unresolved bright reflections from jets could plausibly create misleading impressions on colour film stock from 1950. The missing-frame claim therefore sits in a peculiar position: it cannot be proved, but neither can it be fully eliminated from consideration because the surviving record is incomplete.

Why the chain of custody became the real story

In many UFO cases, the central dispute concerns what witnesses saw. In Great Falls, the deeper argument became who controlled the evidence after the sighting.

That shift matters because physical evidence only retains value if its handling can be reconstructed. Modern forensic standards rely on documented custody logs, controlled storage, authenticated originals, and reproducible examination methods. None of that existed in a rigorous form for the Mariana film. The reel moved between a civilian witness, local screenings, Air Force personnel, technical analysts, duplicate-copy processes, television use, and eventual archival preservation over many years. Each transfer created opportunities for damage, trimming, duplication loss, or simple confusion. [Wikipedia]WikipediaIncidente UFO di MarianaIncidente UFO di Mariana

Even some sceptical commentators have acknowledged that the Air Force handled early UFO evidence inconsistently during this period. Edward J. Ruppelt, who later headed Project Blue Book, wrote that the military initially showed little sustained interest in UFO cases and often dismissed reports quickly. That broader atmosphere helped fuel later suspicion that important evidence might have been mishandled or altered, whether deliberately or carelessly. [Wikipedia]WikipediaIncidente UFO di MarianaIncidente UFO di Mariana

For UFO proponents, the alleged disappearance of the clearest frames became symbolic of a wider belief that official agencies suppressed stronger evidence. For sceptics, the claim often looked like retrospective inflation: an ordinary ambiguous film gradually transformed in memory into something sharper and more extraordinary than the surviving material justified. The missing frames thus became a psychological and institutional dispute as much as a technical one.

How missing evidence changes the case

The most important consequence of the dispute is methodological. Every interpretation of the Great Falls film must now begin with a qualification: the evidence may not be complete.

That uncertainty affects all sides differently.

If Mariana was correct

If dozens of clear opening frames really disappeared, then later analyses may have been working from a degraded evidential sample. Under that scenario:

  • the strongest visual information was lost before formal study;
  • witness descriptions of rotating metallic discs gain indirect support;
  • later sceptical explanations become less secure because they rely on incomplete material.

This possibility is one reason some UFO researchers continue to regard the Great Falls film as potentially significant despite decades of criticism. [Distinctly Montana]distinctlymontana.comwhen ufos first came great fallsDistinctly MontanaWhen UFOs First Came to Great Falls23 Apr 2026 — Then the Air Force sent the footage back (a little surprising, frankly…

If the Air Force was correct

If only a damaged frame was removed, then the controversy may reflect memory distortion, projection artefacts, or later myth-building around a famous case. In that interpretation:

  • local viewers may have misremembered early screenings;
  • repeated copying and projection could have altered perceptions of clarity;
  • Mariana’s later recollections may have become more detailed over time;
  • the surviving footage remains the best available representation of what was actually filmed.

Under this view, the chain-of-custody dispute says more about UFO culture and distrust of official institutions than about the objects themselves.

The unresolved middle ground

The most defensible historical position may be narrower and less dramatic. Something probably changed in the film’s handling over time, but the surviving documentation is too incomplete to establish exactly what. Small edits, damage trimming, duplication loss, projection wear, and later copying could all have contributed to the discrepancy between recollections and the surviving archive.

That ambiguity is ultimately why the Great Falls film remains difficult to close as a historical case. The surviving footage is not decisive enough to settle the sighting, while the alleged missing footage cannot be independently reconstructed. The result is a permanently divided evidential record: one part observable, one part remembered, and neither fully capable of eliminating the other.
