Did Fargo's UFO Dogfight Really Happen?
The Gorman “dogfight” was a 27-minute night-time UFO chase reported over Fargo, North Dakota, on 1 October 1948 by Second Lieutenant George F. Gorman, a North Dakota Air National Guard pilot flying an F-51/P-51 Mustang.

The object was described not as a structured machine but as a light. In the commonly repeated account, Gorman closed in and later described it as a small, clear white, round light that blinked before becoming steady as he approached. He reported repeated attempts to intercept it, including near head-on passes and climbs that appeared to outmatch his aircraft. The “dogfight” label is therefore a little misleading. No physical craft was identified, no wreckage or photograph was produced, and the object’s main observable feature was brightness. Why the case looked strong at first

The official answer: a lighted weather balloon
The central official explanation was a lighted weather balloon released from Fargo at about 8:50 pm, roughly ten minutes before the sighting developed. The weakness is that a balloon alone is less satisfying for the later, more aggressive manoeuvres Gorman reported. The two-stage sceptical reconstruction
The most useful sceptical reconstruction treats the sighting as a sequence, not a single object behaving consistently for 27 minutes. It does not prove that a structured craft was present. The strongest physical-sounding claim, the radiation reading, was explained by ordinary post-flight exposure.
