Introduction
On 13 October 1917, a huge crowd gathered at Cova da Iria near Fatima after three shepherd children said a public sign would accompany the final apparition of the Virgin Mary. What happened next became known as the “Miracle of the Sun”, one of the most famous and disputed mass-witness events of the twentieth century. Witnesses described the Sun spinning, changing colour, plunging toward the Earth, or becoming strangely easy to look at. Others saw little or nothing unusual. The central historical fact is not that the Sun literally moved through space, which would have been visible worldwide, but that thousands of people reported an extraordinary shared experience after a widely publicised prediction. The disagreement over exactly what they saw is the core of the controversy. The witness claims matter because they sit at the intersection of religion, crowd psychology, journalism, atmospheric optics and historical memory. Fatima is therefore not simply a devotional story or a sceptical debunking case. It is a rare example where a predicted public event produced large-scale testimony, immediate newspaper coverage and decades of continuing argument over what the evidence can honestly support.
What witnesses reported on 13 October
The crowd estimates vary widely, usually between 30,000 and 70,000 people, with some later Catholic writers giving even higher figures. Contemporary newspaper reporting is especially important because it predates later devotional embellishment. The Portuguese newspaper O Século sent journalist Avelino de Almeida, an anticlerical reporter not known for sympathy to Marian claims. His account became one of the most frequently cited descriptions of the event. According to multiple early reports, the day began with heavy rain and muddy ground. Witnesses then described the clouds breaking and the Sun appearing as a pale or silver disc that could supposedly be stared at without pain. Many accounts describe movement rather than simple brightness. Common themes included:
- The Sun appearing to rotate or spin.
- Rapid colour changes across the landscape.
- Zig-zag or plunging motions.
- A sensation that the Sun was falling toward the Earth.
- Sudden drying of wet clothes and ground after rainfall.
These themes recur often enough to show that many people believed they had witnessed something extraordinary, but the details differ significantly from account to account. Avelino de Almeida wrote that the Sun “danced” and made “incredible movements outside all cosmic laws”, language that became central to later retellings. His report also stressed the crowd’s emotional reaction: people crying, praying and fearing the end of the world. Some later testimony came from educated witnesses whose professions were highlighted by Catholic defenders to strengthen credibility. These included physicians, lawyers, professors and local clergy. Dr José Maria de Almeida Garrett, a professor from Coimbra, later described the Sun as a sharply defined disc emitting coloured light and apparently rotating. Other witnesses reported similar visual impressions from villages several miles away from Fatima itself. [Fatima Center]fatima.orgA BLESSED FEAST OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA TO YOU! One of the more interesting features of the testimony is that many observers did not describe a detailed religious vision. Most people did not claim to see Mary, angels or heavenly figures. Instead, the overwhelming focus was on unusual solar or atmospheric effects. That distinction matters historically because it suggests the crowd was not uniformly sharing the same visionary content. Why the accounts do not all match
The witness claims are often presented in simplified form as though tens of thousands of people saw the exact same thing. The historical record is much messier.
Some witnesses saw dramatic movement. Others reported only unusual colours or changes in brightness. Some saw nothing extraordinary at all. The variation is one of the strongest arguments used by sceptics against the claim that the Sun physically moved. A truly astronomical event would presumably have appeared consistent across observers and geographical regions. [History Extra]historyextra.comHistory ExtraMiracle of the Sun: When Thousands Gathered To Witness…13 Oct 2022 — These sceptics have pointed out the optical effects…
The differences appear at several levels:
The Sun behaved differently in different testimonies
Descriptions range from gentle spinning to catastrophic plunges toward Earth. Some witnesses described coloured light washing over the crowd and landscape. Others focused on the ability to stare directly at the Sun. A few accounts contain almost apocalyptic imagery, while others are restrained and observational. This inconsistency does not automatically prove fabrication. In crowd events, especially emotionally charged ones, observers commonly interpret ambiguous stimuli differently. But it does weaken the strongest versions of the miracle claim.
Expectation shaped perception
The Fatima gatherings had been building for months, and the children had publicly promised a miracle that would convince observers. Newspapers had spread the prediction widely. By October, many in the crowd arrived expecting a supernatural sign. [Wikipedia]WikipediaMiracle of the SunMiracle of the Sun
Psychologists and sceptical investigators argue that expectation and social contagion likely influenced perception. Once people around an observer shouted that the Sun was moving, others may have interpreted normal visual distortions in the same dramatic way. Joe Nickell and Benjamin Radford both argue that prolonged staring at the Sun can create retinal after-images, colour shifts and apparent motion. [Wikipedia]WikipediaOur Lady of Fátimaa Catholic title of Mary, mother of Jesus, based on the Marian apparitions reported in 1917 by three shepherd children at the Cova da Iri…
Staring at the Sun produces real visual distortions
One reason the sceptical explanation remains influential is that several reported effects resemble known optical phenomena. Looking directly at the Sun can produce temporary retinal fatigue and motion illusions. Thin clouds, moisture and dust can also reduce glare and create unusual colour effects. [Wikipedia]WikipediaMiracle of the SunMiracle of the Sun
Meteorological explanations have also been proposed. Weather writer Paul Simons suggested that atmospheric conditions, possibly including high-altitude dust, could have altered the Sun’s appearance. [Wikipedia]WikipediaOur Lady of Fátimaa Catholic title of Mary, mother of Jesus, based on the Marian apparitions reported in 1917 by three shepherd children at the Cova da Iri…
Critics emphasise a key scientific objection: if the Sun had truly moved through the sky in a physical sense, the event would have been visible globally and would have caused catastrophic gravitational effects. No astronomical observatories recorded such an event. [Wikipedia]WikipediaOur Lady of Fátimaa Catholic title of Mary, mother of Jesus, based on the Marian apparitions reported in 1917 by three shepherd children at the Cova da Iri…
The strongest testimony and its limits
Defenders of the miracle often emphasise that the witnesses included sceptics, secular journalists and politically anticlerical observers. This point is historically important. Fatima did attract witnesses who were not predisposed to support Catholic miracle claims. [Basic Income]basicincome.comBasic IncomeIs There Strong Evidence for The Miracle of the Sun?But to complete my case I think only requires the testimony of one man, p…
However, this does not resolve the central problem: testimony alone cannot establish that the Sun literally moved. Even honest witnesses can misinterpret unusual visual experiences. The strongest historical argument is therefore narrower than many devotional retellings suggest.
A modest but defensible historical claim would include several points:
- A very large crowd gathered after a public prediction.
- Many witnesses sincerely reported unusual solar or atmospheric phenomena.
- The reports were documented rapidly in newspapers and later testimony.
- The accounts contain both overlap and contradiction.
- No independent astronomical evidence supports a literal movement of the Sun.
That narrower formulation fits both the surviving documents and the scientific objections more comfortably than absolute claims that celestial mechanics were suspended over Portugal. Why the event became so influential
The witness claims mattered far beyond the field at Cova da Iria because they transformed Fatima from a local children’s vision story into an international religious event. The prediction of a public sign gave the case unusual force compared with many apparition reports that depend only on private testimony.
The event also arrived during a period of political and cultural tension in Portugal. The republican government was strongly anticlerical, and the Catholic Church had lost significant public influence. The apparent public success of the Fatima prediction therefore carried symbolic weight beyond the immediate religious claims. [Wikipedia]WikipediaOur Lady of Fátimaa Catholic title of Mary, mother of Jesus, based on the Marian apparitions reported in 1917 by three shepherd children at the Cova da Iri…
Later Catholic recognition of the Fatima apparitions did not require every reported detail of the Miracle of the Sun to be scientifically explained. The Church’s position was essentially that the events were “worthy of belief”, not that Catholics were obliged to accept every witness description literally. [Wikipedia]WikipediaOur Lady of Fátimaa Catholic title of Mary, mother of Jesus, based on the Marian apparitions reported in 1917 by three shepherd children at the Cova da Iri…
The witness reports also became attractive to later UFO writers and anomalous-phenomena researchers because of the descriptions of luminous motion, coloured effects and mass observation. Some ufological interpretations compare the Fatima phenomenon to later “flying disc” reports, though this remains outside mainstream historical and Catholic interpretation. What a modest historical claim can support
The Miracle of the Sun remains famous because it resists easy categorisation. It cannot be dismissed simply as a fabricated story, since there is substantial contemporary testimony that something unusual was experienced by many people. Yet the evidence also falls far short of proving that the Sun physically danced in the sky.
The most cautious historical reading is that Fatima involved a real mass experience shaped by expectation, weather conditions, crowd dynamics and intense religious meaning. That conclusion leaves room for both believers and sceptics to interpret the event differently.
Believers tend to argue that the prediction, the scale of the crowd and the sincerity of witnesses point toward divine intervention. Sceptics argue that inconsistent testimony, optical effects and the absence of physical astronomical evidence point toward a psychological and atmospheric explanation. [History Extra]historyextra.comHistory ExtraMiracle of the Sun: When Thousands Gathered To Witness…13 Oct 2022 — These sceptics have pointed out the optical effects…
What gives the Fatima case lasting historical interest is precisely that tension. The witness claims are too numerous and too well documented to ignore, but too inconsistent and physically problematic to settle the debate cleanly.
