Introduction

The official US government position on the 2022 “Middle East orb” video is narrower and more cautious than many public retellings suggest. The object remains officially unidentified, but AARO — the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office — has repeatedly stated that the footage does not demonstrate anomalous or extraordinary behaviour. In practical terms, that means investigators could not confidently determine what the object was from the available evidence, yet also saw no verified indication of impossible speed, advanced propulsion, or non-human technology. Official View illustration 1 That distinction matters because the case became one of the clearest public examples of AARO’s broader philosophy: unresolved does not automatically mean exotic. The office has consistently argued that many military UAP reports remain open simply because the underlying data are incomplete, degraded, ambiguous, or missing critical contextual information. The Middle East clip therefore sits at the centre of a larger debate about how governments classify uncertainty, what counts as evidence of anomalous performance, and how much can really be inferred from short military sensor videos alone.

What AARO Publicly Said

The official public description of the case came through Pentagon-released material shown during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing in April 2023. The Department of Defense description stated that an MQ-9 drone recorded “an apparent silver, orb-like object” crossing the sensor’s field of view over the Middle East. The same statement also made AARO’s position unusually explicit: the office assessed that the object was “not exhibiting anomalous behavior,” while still remaining unidentified. [7atc.army.mil]7atc.army.milVideoThis clip was taken by an MQ-9 in the Middle East… object in the clip is not exhibiting anomalous behavior, the object remains un…

That wording was carefully chosen. AARO did not label the footage a hoax, sensor malfunction, or confirmed balloon. But it also did not categorise the object as displaying the kinds of performance characteristics often associated with stronger UAP claims, such as:

  • instantaneous acceleration,
  • impossible manoeuvres,
  • hypersonic movement without signatures,
  • visible propulsion anomalies,
  • or confirmed multi-sensor behaviour inconsistent with known aircraft.

Instead, the office treated the video as an unresolved but low-information case.

During NASA’s May 2023 public UAP meeting, then-AARO director Sean Kirkpatrick used the same footage as an example of the kind of report the office sees frequently. He described metallic spherical objects as a common category of military UAP reports seen “all over the world”. However, he also stressed that the Middle East clip “demonstrated no enigmatic technical capabilities” and posed “no threat to airborne safety.” [Rev]rev.comnasa holds first public meeting on ufos transcriptRevNASA Holds First Public Meeting on UFOs TranscriptThis is a spherical orb metallic in the Middle East 2022 by an MQ-9. Kirkpatrick’s broader point was methodological rather than sensational. AARO’s task is not simply to decide whether an object is “strange”; it is to determine whether available evidence supports an identifiable explanation or demonstrates genuinely anomalous characteristics. The Middle East orb satisfied neither condition completely. It could not be conclusively identified, but the available data also failed to establish extraordinary behaviour.

ABC News reported that Kirkpatrick further explained it would be “virtually impossible” to identify the object fully from the video alone. [Facebook]facebook.comFacebookABC News got a first look at dozens of newly declassified UFO…ABC News got a first look at dozens of newly declassified UFO vi…

Why “Unresolved” Does Not Mean Alien

One of the biggest public misunderstandings surrounding the case is the assumption that “unidentified” is equivalent to “unexplainable”. AARO has consistently rejected that interpretation.

The Middle East video illustrates a recurring problem in aerial observation analysis: apparent movement inside a sensor image is not the same thing as measured movement through physical space. Without complete telemetry, a small nearby object can appear to move rapidly relative to terrain or background features because of parallax — the visual effect produced when the observing platform itself is moving. Drone motion, zoom level, camera stabilisation, atmospheric distortion, and unknown range to target can all radically alter apparent speed and trajectory.

This is one reason the Pentagon repeatedly avoided claiming the orb performed impossible manoeuvres. The public clip contains no released range data, no disclosed altitude estimate, no radar correlation, no verified size measurement, and no independently released tracking information. As a result, viewers cannot reliably calculate the object’s actual velocity or flight characteristics from the video alone. [7atc.army.mil]7atc.army.milVideoThis clip was taken by an MQ-9 in the Middle East… object in the clip is not exhibiting anomalous behavior, the object remains un… [2U.S.]war.govDepartment of WarMultimedia | U.S. Department of War12 Jul 2022 — This clip was taken by an MQ-9 in the Middle East, and while AARO asses… Department of War

AARO’s language reflects an evidentiary threshold rather than a belief system. The office generally separates cases into several broad categories:

  • identified conventional objects,
  • likely but unconfirmed conventional explanations,
  • unresolved because of insufficient data,
  • and a much smaller set potentially warranting deeper anomaly analysis.

The Middle East orb appears to sit firmly in the “insufficient data” category.

NASA’s Independent UAP Study Team reinforced that interpretation in 2023. The report used the same orb footage as an example of how limited contextual data can prevent scientific resolution. Its caption stated that the object remained unidentified “due to limited data.” [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportThe study of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) presents a unique scientific opportunity tha…

Why AARO Did Not Close the Case

Although sceptical analysts frequently argue the object was probably a balloon or airborne clutter, AARO did not publicly close the file with a definitive explanation. That restraint reveals something important about how the office handles uncertainty.

AARO’s public statements suggest three main reasons the case remained unresolved.

The released clip is only a fragment

The publicly available footage is short and heavily stripped of operational context. Investigators may possess additional classified information, but what has been publicly shown contains limited analytical value by itself.

The video lacks:

  • exact sensor metadata,
  • full drone flight parameters,
  • altitude information,
  • atmospheric conditions,
  • and correlated tracking from other systems.

Without those details, even a likely explanation can remain officially unconfirmed.

AARO avoids overclaiming certainty

One notable feature of the office’s public posture is its reluctance to force definitive explanations when evidence remains incomplete. In earlier decades, military UFO investigations were often criticised either for dismissing reports too aggressively or for using vague language that encouraged speculation.

AARO appears to be trying to occupy a middle ground:

  • acknowledging unresolved cases openly,
  • while refusing to treat unresolved status as proof of extraordinary origin.

The Middle East orb became a demonstration case for that approach.

Sensor interpretation is difficult even for professionals

Kirkpatrick repeatedly emphasised that trained operators and advanced systems can still misperceive ordinary objects under unusual viewing conditions. During NASA’s public meeting, he specifically warned that such footage can “spoof” or mislead both pilots and sensors. [TheJournal.ie]thejournal.ienasa ufo public meeting 6082615 May2023NASA scientists say 'more high quality data' needed on…31 May 2023 — One example of a still unexplained phenomenon was a flying metall…Published: May 2023

That point is easy to miss in public debate. Military personnel are skilled observers, but aerial sensor interpretation is not infallible. Infrared imagery, stabilised targeting systems, compression artefacts, and moving observation platforms can create misleading impressions even when nobody is acting dishonestly or incompetently.

The Tension Between Public Curiosity and Official Standards

The orb case became culturally important partly because it exposed a mismatch between public expectations and institutional evidentiary standards.

For many UFO enthusiasts, the fact that the Pentagon released the footage at all implied exceptional significance. The object’s appearance — a metallic sphere with no obvious wings or exhaust plume — encouraged speculation about advanced technology.

But AARO framed the same footage very differently. To investigators, the video represented a common category of unresolved military sightings that lacked sufficient contextual information for a firm conclusion. Kirkpatrick even described such metallic spheres as among the most frequently reported forms of UAP worldwide. [Global News]globalnews.cametallic flying orbs nasa pentagon panel ufos uapsGlobal NewsMetallic flying orbs seen around the world, baffling NASA…5 Jun 2023 — Kirkpatrick said the spherical objects, which are ab…

This difference in interpretation explains why the case remains controversial despite the relatively restrained official language.

Sceptical investigators, including open-source analysts at Bellingcat, argued that the video is highly consistent with a small balloon whose apparent motion is exaggerated by parallax and drone movement. [bellingcat]bellingcat.comisnt that a balloon deflating a dod ufo videobellingcatIsn't That A Balloon? Deflating a DoD UFO Video24 Oct 2023 —… video of a metallic, spherical orb flying over the Middle East…

Meanwhile, some UFO commentators interpreted AARO’s refusal to identify the object as indirect evidence that the office privately considered it anomalous. However, no released official statement supports that conclusion. Publicly, AARO has consistently said the opposite: the object was unresolved, but not assessed as displaying extraordinary capabilities. What Data Would Be Needed to Resolve the Case

The Middle East orb remains unresolved largely because the publicly available evidence is too limited to support confident measurement. Investigators would need a much richer data package to close the case conclusively.

The most useful missing elements would include:

  • Range and distance measurements

Knowing how far the object was from the MQ-9 sensor would immediately change estimates of size and speed.

  • Precise drone telemetry

The aircraft’s heading, banking, acceleration, and camera movement are essential for correcting parallax effects.

  • Radar or multi-sensor correlation

Independent detection by radar, infrared, electro-optical systems, or another aircraft would greatly strengthen any interpretation.

  • Atmospheric and wind data

Wind conditions at altitude could help determine whether the object behaved like a drifting balloon or a powered craft.

  • Longer-duration tracking

Short clips often exaggerate apparent motion. Extended tracking would reveal whether the object maintained consistent behaviour.

NASA’s UAP study team repeatedly argued that higher-quality, standardised data collection is the central problem in modern UAP analysis. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportThe study of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) presents a unique scientific opportunity tha…

That is why the Middle East orb occupies an unusual category in public discourse. It is neither a solved mundane case nor persuasive evidence of exotic technology. Instead, it functions as a case study in evidentiary limits: a real military observation that cannot be firmly identified, yet also does not meet the threshold for confirmed anomalous behaviour.
