What Renato Nicolaï said happened

The witness, usually named as Renato Nicolaï, reported that at about 5 p.m. he was working outside near his house when a faint whistling sound drew his attention to a grey, disc-like object descending towards a terraced area of his property. His description was concrete but not mechanically precise. He compared the object to two inverted plates joined rim to rim, roughly lead-coloured, with a ridge around its circumference and circular structures beneath it that he interpreted as possible “feet” or openings. Why the investigation became unusually important

The case did not remain a local anecdote because the authorities responded quickly. GEPAN’s technical note records that the gendarmerie was alerted on 9 January, arrived at about 11:30 a.m., interviewed the witness, took photographs and collected soil samples using the official gendarmerie procedure. What the physical traces actually showed

The careful position sits between dismissal and overclaim. The official record gives the case weight because it preserves early sampling, laboratory work and a named institutional trail. It does not remove the core uncertainty: whether the physical trace was caused by the object described by Nicolaï, by an ordinary ground event later misinterpreted, or by some mixture of real trace evidence and mistaken attribution.

The sceptical challenge: were the marks just vehicle traces?

The most important sceptical argument is not that “nothing happened”. It is that the trace may have had an ordinary cause unrelated to a landed aerial object. These criticisms do not automatically solve the case. Tyres, tools, barrels, soil disturbance, rain, later contamination and ordinary plant stress would each need to fit the exact timing, sampling pattern and laboratory observations. How strong is the witness evidence?

Nicolaï’s testimony has several features that make it difficult to dismiss casually. It was reported quickly, given to gendarmes, attached to a visible trace, and did not obviously grow into an elaborate story about occupants, messages or a wider conspiracy. The case should not be reduced to a slogan. “French agency proves UFO landing” is too strong. “It was obviously nothing” is also too strong unless one accepts the tyre-track explanation without resolving the laboratory and chronology questions.
