Introduction
The most famous detail in the Kinross incident is the reported “merge” of two radar blips shortly before the disappearance of the F-89C Scorpion flown by First Lieutenant Felix Moncla Jr and Second Lieutenant Robert L. Wilson. In many later UFO retellings, this moment became the apparent climax of the case: the interceptor closed on an unidentified target, the two radar returns fused into one, and the jet was supposedly swallowed or destroyed by the unknown object. Yet the actual evidential value of the radar merge is far more limited than popular accounts suggest.
The radar data remains important because it confirms that ground controllers were tracking both the interceptor and another aircraft or radar contact over Lake Superior. However, 1950s ground-controlled interception radar had relatively coarse resolution, intermittent tracking quality, and important operational limitations. A merged return could mean two aircraft were extremely close together on the radar display, but it did not by itself prove collision, contact, or disappearance into another object. What Ground Radar Reportedly Showed
According to later reconstructions based on surviving Air Force material and radar-station history, controllers at Calumet Air Force Station tracked an unidentified or insufficiently identified aircraft over Lake Superior on the evening of 23 November 1953. Ground-control operators then guided the interceptor toward the target using Cold War-era ground-controlled interception procedures. Near the end of the intercept sequence, radar operators reportedly observed the two returns converge into a single radar blip. This sequence created two very different narratives:

What the merge does not prove:
- That the two aircraft collided.
- That the unknown target destroyed the interceptor.
- That the target was extraterrestrial or anomalous.
- That the radar operators saw a single object absorb another object.
- That only one object left the area afterwards.
Some later accounts even claimed that the combined blip continued flying away after the merge, implying that the unknown craft survived while the fighter vanished. Without wreckage or a definitive accident reconstruction, the radar merge became a symbolic stand-in for the entire mystery. For UFO proponents, it appeared to show direct interaction between the jet and an unknown object. For sceptical investigators, it represented only the final stage of a conventional intercept followed by a probable aviation accident.
The Most Cautious Reading of the Radar Evidence
A careful reading of the Kinross radar evidence leads to a narrower but still significant conclusion. The radar operators almost certainly tracked an intercept in progress, and the interceptor probably closed to near visual range of another aircraft or radar contact over Lake Superior. Shortly afterwards, the F-89 disappeared from communications and radar tracking.
Beyond that point, the radar evidence becomes much less decisive.
The merge itself was consistent with ordinary radar behaviour for closely spaced targets on 1950s ground-controlled interception systems.
